Why have TM matches and MT suggestions stopped working?

Troubleshooting connection issues

Matecat uses WebSockets to provide some of the functionalities of its editing page such as Translation Matches, Glossary Matches and Machine Translation.
WebSockets are a technology that allows content to be displayed on web pages as if they were software installed on your computer.

Sometimes, you might find that some of Matecat’s features suddenly stop working, which is likely to be a WebSocket malfunctioning or getting blocked. Among the reasons for that you can find:

  • Older browsers
  • Some download managers
  • Some firewalls
  • Some antivirus software
  • Some Internet service providers
  • Strict configurations on routers

Software that might be blocking WebSockets

Some software blocks WebSockets by default, for example:

  • ZoneAlarm Firewall
  • AVG
  • Avast
  • Bitdefender
  • IObit Malware Fighter
  • Internet Download Manager
  • Superfish VisualDiscovery
  • Avira Browser Safety
  • Browser Guard
  • Pokki
  • Smart Panel

In general, the software that might be blocking WebSockets includes:

  • Spyware and adware
  • Antivirus
  • Ad-blocking software

Troubleshooting for users using private networks

If one of the above software is installed on your computer, it might have blocked Matecat’s WebSocket thinking that it was malicious.
You can disable it temporarily and check whether Matecat is functioning correctly.
If Matecat now works correctly, open the settings of the software that is blocking Matecat and check whether there is a way to allow WebSocket connections with Matecat.

Troubleshooting for users using public networks

If you are using Matecat from an office or any other public space connected to a public network, the malfunction might be caused by the network’s settings. In this case, try to use a different connection to check if things start working again (your phone’s hotspot should do just fine). If you are not able to do that, or if you verify that the connection you were using was indeed the issue, we recommend you get in touch with your network administrator if you can and ask them to unblock Matecat’s WebSocket connections.
